A worst-case scenario might require you to rappel or transport a casualty on a moments notice. Understanding the Swiss Seat will allow you to successfully accomplish this task. This harness requires minimal equipment, and it has stood the test of time due to the quickness it may be employed. It's a fast and simple harness which can increase your odds of egress in a bug out scenario--all you need is a 10 to 12-foot rope (Natural fiber rope or a static line rope, not damaged in any way, and rated to support more than your body weight), a carabiner rated for supporting your weight (with a lockable gate), and leather gloves for rappelling.
Here are the steps in making a Swiss Seat:
1) Locate the center of the rope.
2) Hold the bight of the centered rope against your left-hip if you are right-handed or against your right-hip if you are left-handed. This is because you will tie a square not for the final step and you want it opposite from your rappel break-hand.
3) Drop the bight, simultaneously, wrapping the rope around your waist; if done correctly, one rope end should be longer than the other.
4) Next, make two overhand knots and allow the running ends to hang.
5) Reach between your legs and pull up each rope-end behind you, around the rope line on your lower back.
6) Squat and pull the rope lines tight.
7) Tie a square knot at your hip with one half hitch on each side of the square knot.
8) You can tuck the excess rope line into your pocket.
9) Attach a locking carabiner through the initial wrapped portion of the Swiss Seat, as well as the wrap with the square knot.
There’s a lot of publications regarding the Swiss Seat with additional pictures--be sure to check them out, practice tying this harness, and apply it in the field! Rappel safely!
