Fieldcraft’s Director of Family Preparedness, Amber Elle., has some tips if you are traveling with firearms! Amber has conducted extensive travel since becoming a member of Team Fieldcraft through the training courses she instructs across the United States! We hope her tips make your next trip a little more seamless when flying, and we hope you have safe travels to and from your destination!
Flying with a firearm can be an intimidating idea for a lot of gun owners, but the process-as regulated and overseen by TSA is most often a smooth process as long as you prepare yourself in advance to meet the requirements of both TSA as well as your airline.
1. Unload your firearm and all magazines. I lock the slide to the rear and insert a chamber flag for extra proof to eliminate any issues at the airport with employees that may be unfamiliar or uncomfortable with firearms.
2. If traveling with ammunition, store in packaging that will secure and separate each individual round-many original manufacturer’s packing will work or you can buy a container created for this purpose. Each airline has its own limit on the weight of ammunition allowed but a good rule of thumb is no more than 11 pounds.
3. Secure unloaded firearm and magazine(s) in a hard-sided case and ensure every lock access on the case is secured with either a keyed or coded lock.
4. Keep the key on your person as you travel DO NOT put the key in checked luggage.
5. When you arrive at the airport declare that you have a firearm at the check-in counter (you will not be able to check-in at the kiosk or through the app when you are checking a firearm). They may ask you to unlock your case for proof that it is unloaded or they may simply accept your declaration as proof. Sign the airline’s declaration card and place it with your firearm case in your luggage or tape it to the case if it is being checked as its own item.
6. When you retrieve your luggage at your destination you’ll have to claim your firearm case or your suitcase containing your firearm case at the airline luggage desk (found near the luggage carousel) but it should NOT be on the carousel (they occasionally make an error and place it there, however, so be attentive and check both locations if issues locating your items arise).
7. It is your responsibility to be aware of the firearm laws in all locations through which you are traveling (including states/cities where you may simply be making a connecting flight). It’s important to note that NYC airports can become tricky legal entanglements for many travelers flying with firearms.
TIP: Delta airlines often adds a large zip tie to any suitcase containing a firearm, so carrying a pair of fingernail clippers in your carry-on will allow you to break through the plastic once you claim your items at your destination.
Safe travels!
