On the fifteenth day of every month, we run a fire drill in our house. The kids wake up excited about it, and I usually make sure there’s a fun meal to accompany the day-usually involving fire-like hot dogs or tin foil dinners. Getting them hyped up for it in the days leading up to it makes it even better.
Since it’s the season of many fire hazards, I’d love for you to join our fire drill day/night in your own home this month. It’s much more than just practical preparedness, it’s bonding and investing in what matters most-our littles, and our family unit.
Some tips for your first fire drill:
-Make sure you have fire detectors on every level and inside/outside of every sleeping space.
-Check the batteries + involve the kids. They can even have a simple “checklist” to verify each detector. This step is important so that they can learn the sound of an alarm.
-Draw a sketch of your house (you can use standard paper and make copies for the kids to have their own, or use a poster board for more of a presentation) and mark all exits. Talk through escape routes for each room when a door isn’t an option.
-Make a plan to invest in a second story fire escape ladder if you have an upper level in your home. My favorite is the Kiddie brand anti slip version.
-Teach kids how to open windows when door exits are blocked. I’ve found that they are usually capable once taught when they’re closer to 4 or 5.
-Choose a “code word” that will signal children to react according to their practices if tragedy should strike
-Choose a safe meeting place outside of your home as a rendezvous point. Side note: let your neighbors or local family know about your safe place so that they know where to look for your children as quickly as possible in the event of a fire.
-Now you’re ready to practice! Run through different scenarios and drills! Stand in the space where you want to “block” them in with fire and have them find another escape. Encourage them to work together if you have more than one child. My kiddos love for me to time them on their escape to the rendezvous point and then have them try to “beat” their time the next run through.
