Due to magnetic pull in the Earth, a compass's direction and a map's plotted direction hardly ever correspond. Because the Earth's magnetic poles are not fixed in relation to its axis, it deviates from true North over time and in different locations around the world.
There are (3) key directions you need to keep in mind when conducting land navigation, which include: True North, Grid North, and Magnetic North. True North is calculated by using an imaginary line through the Earth rather than by using a compass--It is the direction that leads to the North Pole. Grid North is a navigational term referring to the direction northwards along the grid lines of a map. Magnetic North is the direction in which the north end of a compass needle or other freely suspended magnet will point in response to the Earth's magnetic field.
Roughly, somewhere close to the Mississippi River, the declination is close to 0 degrees, which means True North and Magnetic North are in alignment. No, or minor, calculation and compass adjustment is required in this location.
When you are west of the Mississippi River, your compass needle (due to magnetic pull) is pulled east of True North; and when you are east of the Mississippi River, your compass needle is pulled west.
When west of the Mississippi River (East Declination), think Military Rank Promotion and Demotion. When converting from a Grid North Direction to a Magnetic Direction (General to Major = Demotion), you subtract the GM Angle. When converting from a Magnetic Direction to a Grid Direction (Major to General = Promotion), you add the GM Angle.
When east of the Mississippi River (West Declination), think of an Educational Promotion. When converting from a Grid North Direction to a Magnetic Direction (Graduate to Masters = Promotion), you add the GM Angle. When converting from a Magnetic Direction to a Grid Direction (Masters to Graduate = Demotion), you subtract the GM Angle.
A great resource to find the declination in your area is going to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) here:
