I never taught my children not to talk to strangers. It seemed like repeated verbiage that had no useful application in our day to day lives. I knew that they’d have to talk to strangers, and quite honestly, a stranger may be their ally and resource in many instances.
I can’t say, “Don’t talk to strangers” as a warning and then completely refute my lesson as soon as we pass an old acquaintance that they don’t know and say, “Tell Mrs.Tina hi, she used to teach me English” or “Ask that bank teller if you can have a sucker for your brother”. It’s confusing.
It’s not a tool for their toolbox
It’s an unsubstantiated fear and...
It doesn’t work.
In the last year I’ve read more books than I can count on situational awareness and a few of them touch on this exact topic, I’ve never felt more validated in my life. Something that seemed natural for me to implement is taught by our modern experts and I’m so hopeful that we can progress as a society teaching the next generation to think, not fear. So, what do I teach?
I teach my kiddos to look for a “safe adult” if and when they need help and they have somehow found themselves alone. What’s a safe adult?
We start with moms.
Moms are normally more inclined to feel a nurturing protection over a child that needs help and will see it through to the solution.
Next we look for dads with kids.
Lastly we would look for an adult with distinguishing characteristics. Maybe the uniform of the store they’re in, maybe a security or law enforcement worker, maybe a nurse or a clinic worker-it depends on the setting.
I play the “choose your adult” game when we are out and about occasionally to test their selection process. It’s easy. Tell them to pretend they have to find a safe adult right then and there. What’s their choice? Talk through their responses. Always redirect or reinforce through encouragement-never shame.
The truth is, strangers are part of everyday life, and often times strangers can be a blessing. Education and taking the long way around to understand humanity versus fearing it will set us all up for success.
